Africa has come a long way from the time when it was regarded as a poor, hopeless continent with precarious states and beggarly people, “la damnés de la terre,” that arouse pity. Indeed, some have dared to say that, “Africa has no future.” Africa has confounded those naysayers. The continent today is referred to as “a land of opportunity” and by others as “the last frontier.”
According to the Mckinsey Global Institute, Africa’s economies are on the move. The continent’s GDP rose by 4.9 percent a year from 2000 through 2008, more than twice its pace in the 1980s and 1990s. Africa today ranks, amongst the fastest growing economic regions in the world. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Africa is expected to grow by 6 percent in 2011 and nearly by 6 percent in 2012. This growth will require a cadre of skilled managers and leaders to manage and sustain this growth.
Unfortunately, most of the current business and leadership schools on the continent have not been able to produce the right kind of graduates to manage this growth sustainably.
This is due to the use of inappropriate pedagogy to address the current challenges pertaining to Africa’s political economy. The African Graduate School of Management and leadership was founded to bridge this gap.
The school was founded in January 2011 to meet this challenge. It is an innovative, vibrant and forward-looking school, with a cutting-edge pedagogy, relevant to the African environment that a young school of management and leadership need to offer to move Africa forward. The African Graduate School of Management and Leadership will be a place where students from all parts of Africa and indeed the world can come together to study and research on new management, leadership and entrepreneurship issues. This cross-cultural, cross-fertilization of ideas and multidisciplinary approach to learning across different generations is what sets us apart as an institution. As an institution, we believe that despite Africa’s challenges, it has a lot of potential, because as they say “success in life comes not from holding a good hand, but playing a poor hand well.” We invite you to be part of this journey and experience.
