Center for Exemplary Leadership

One of the major challenges to growth and development on the African continent is the lack of exemplary leaders. The few that Africa has had like the Nkrumah's, Nyerere's and the Mandela's are few and far between. Yet, their presence is a sin-qua-non to the development efforts in Africa. Exemplary leaders are leaders when they are at their personal best, work tirelessly for the good of their people. Kouzes and Posner in their book The Leadership Challenge point out that there are five practices and commitments of exemplary leadership:

  1. They challenge the process
  2. Inspire a shared vision
  3. Enable others to act
  4. Model the way
  5. Encourage the heart

The Center for Exemplary Leadership at the African Graduate School of Management and Leadership will undertake research, publish, and hold conferences and seminars on exemplary leadership in general but particularly as it pertains to Africa and its growth and development efforts.
