The Africa Governance and Ethics Initiative

The role of good governance in bringing about sustainable development and creation of wealth cannot be emphasized enough. According to the World Bank, governance is the “traditions and institutions by which authority in a country is exercised for the common good. This includes the process by which those in authority are selected, monitored and replaced. It also includes the capacity to effectively manage its resources and implement social policies and finally the respect of citizens and the state for the institutions that govern economic and social interactions among them.”

The African governance and ethics initiative at the African Graduate School of Management and Leadership will bring scholars and entrepreneurs from around the world to undertake research that will strengthen governance and ethics in Africa’s public and private sector institutions to contribute to growth and development on the continent. Thus without good governance, sustainable development in Africa will be impossible.

The research of these scholars will inform policy as well as the content of the courses that will be developed at the school on leadership and governance. Conferences and workshops will be held on the issue at the school and results published.
